Artificial intelligence infrastructure may soon move beyond Earth. SpaceX and NVIDIA are working together to bring powerful AI computing systems into orbit, with the first-generation Starmind AI satellite targeted for launch in the fourth quarter of 2027. The announcement marks an ambitious attempt to take AI computing beyond traditional data centers on Earth.

NVIDIA announced on August 24 that SpaceX-AI will deploy its Vera CPU for next-generation agentic AI workloads and expand its Grok infrastructure using the Vera Rubin platform. The companies are also adapting a Vera Rubin NVL72 system for the Starmind satellite.

AI Computing Moves Toward Orbit

Traditional AI data centers require enormous amounts of electricity, land and cooling infrastructure. SpaceX believes orbit could eventually provide an alternative way to scale computing capacity.

Its Starmind concept uses satellites equipped with localized computing hardware. According to SpaceX, the satellites would use solar energy and radiate heat directly into space, eliminating the need for many of the cooling systems required by conventional data centers. AI-generated results could then be transmitted through high-speed laser links to the Starlink network and back to Earth.

The company says its planned AI1 satellites could carry up to 250 kW of peak computing power, with an average payload of up to 175 kW. SpaceX is also developing a dedicated Gigasat manufacturing facility in Texas to produce these satellites at large scale.

Why NVIDIA's Hardware Matters

NVIDIA's involvement gives the project a major computing component.

SpaceXAI will use NVIDIA Vera CPUs for workloads such as AI-agent orchestration, code execution, data processing and simulations. NVIDIA says Vera contains 88 custom-designed cores and can provide up to 1.2 TB/s of memory bandwidth.

For orbital computing, the companies are developing a space-optimized version of the Vera Rubin NVL72 system. The objective is to adapt high-performance AI computing to the very different requirements of operating in space, including power, thermal management, reliability and physical integration.

First Launch Targeted for 2027

Elon Musk said the first Starmind system is targeted for Q4 2027, with the project expected to reach significant scale in 2028.

However, putting AI hardware into orbit is considerably more complicated than building a conventional data center.

Spacecraft must deal with radiation, launch forces, thermal conditions and limited opportunities for maintenance. The computing hardware also needs to operate reliably for long periods while being exposed to an environment very different from an Earth-based facility.

The project therefore remains an ambitious engineering effort rather than an established replacement for terrestrial data centers.

A New Direction for AI Infrastructure

The partnership comes as SpaceX continues expanding its AI computing capacity on Earth to support Grok and other workloads. NVIDIA says SpaceXAI is scaling toward gigawatt-level computing capacity, while the orbital Starmind project represents an attempt to extend that computing architecture into space.

If SpaceX can successfully manufacture, launch and operate these satellites at scale, the project could introduce an entirely new category of AI infrastructure.
