Humanoid Robots Near Their ChatGPT Moment

The humanoid robotics industry could be approaching a major turning point similar to the arrival of ChatGPT, according to Unitree CEO Wang Xingxing.

Speaking at the 2026 World Robot Conference in Beijing on August 20, Wang said the industry is moving toward a "ChatGPT moment" for embodied intelligence a point where robots could understand simple voice or text instructions and perform most tasks in unfamiliar environments.

The comparison to ChatGPT is significant. When ChatGPT became widely available in 2022, it demonstrated that AI could interact with people in a remarkably natural way and triggered rapid adoption of generative AI. Wang believes robotics could eventually experience a similar breakthrough when machines become capable of understanding and acting in the physical world.

What Would a "ChatGPT Moment" Mean for Robots?

According to Wang, one important milestone would be a humanoid robot being placed in an unfamiliar home and successfully completing around 80% of tasks using voice or text commands, without requiring specialized training for every individual task.

That would represent a major change from today's robots, which are generally designed for specific environments and carefully defined tasks.

Instead of programming a robot for every situation, future systems could potentially observe their surroundings, understand instructions, make decisions and adapt to new situations.

Unitree Is Betting on AI "World Models"

Unitree is focusing heavily on world models, which are AI systems designed to help machines understand and predict what happens in physical environments.

Wang acknowledged that Unitree is still behind where it wants to be in real-world applications. He also said that the capabilities of current humanoids are not yet sufficient for mass deployment, with AI decision-making and interaction remaining major challenges.

The timeline is therefore uncertain. Wang suggested that an optimistic scenario could see a major software breakthrough within two to three years, while a more conservative estimate could stretch to five to ten years.
